Walpurgis night – the last night of April is a special night when communities light bon fires, burning off the old and signaling the entrance of the new. Trimmings from pruning, leaves and dead grass from raking lawns, refuse from remodeling and building, etc go into the fire (actually, I put as much of this kind of stuff as I can into my compost and save lumber for later use).

It’s a big event for the kids, and the adults often form an inpromptu choir to sing songs of spring until the fire burms down. Evil spirits and witches are supposedly about, and the fires are to scare them away – very effective -because I’ve never ever seen any.
