Over the years I’ve been planting blackberries along the fence of the caged garden planning to let them grow wild and make an impenetrable barrier to help keep the rabbits and deer out.

I have about ten different varieties, not all as tasty as I would like. In fact some taste more like paper while others quite good, not always the same from year to year. It seems that when they go wild the flavor is diminished, while the young or trimmed plants give tastier berries. I should have known. So much for the impenetrable barrier. I prefer tasty berries and my favorites this year are the siberian and everett blackberries.
