It’s time to leave again. After leaving Abisko we met up at the old homestead outside of Pajala, where every year there’s the Pääjärvi family reunion. About 30 make it – young and old. It’s also time for the Pajala market where we meet even more friends and relatives.

Now it’s time the leave and get back our garden.

Everything and everywhere is spiffied up and closed until others come for a weekend of calm later.

Here are some pictures from the after.

Our room

The bathhouse/sauna where hours are spent getting a super steam bath and listening to stories of the oldtimers.

The woodshed with newly cut wood.

The side of the house that got repaired and a new facade, damaged in a winter stormed.

Where the tent camp was.

The fire pit where evenings are often spent, grilling sausage, singing, dancing and veiwing the midnight sun – when it’s not raining too much.

Kind of calm and quiet now. Only the surrrrr of mosquitoes (not so many this year).

Everyone is complaining about the cold damp weather. I don’t mind it, but it did put a stop to our plans to wander in the Finnish mountains. Back at the North Sweden homestead It was cold too, but chopping wood sure warms you up.

And it sure is nice the to keep the big caldron of water warm and the sauna in the bastu (bath cabin) fired up.

The sun has come out now, and we are feeling much better, and hoping for some more midnight sun this evening before we head south again tomorrow – back to the garden.

Our neighbor cut down 3 dead ash trees and a birch. He is also master of the wood-fired, community sauna here on the farm.

So, we have been cutting and chopping the logs for the sauna. Good exercise!

It is fired up every friday afternoon, and all are welcome!

The Pääjärvi homestead comes to life once a year the first weekend in July when the Pajala Market takes place. Many family members from all over Sweden gather for an informal reunion.

Tents in the garden behind the house which is full.

Always lots of fika – coffee, cakes and food – pour out of the house.

The water heater and sauna in the garden is always fired up, hot and ready.

The weather was perfect this year, including wind to blow the mosquitos away.

The garden takes up the overflow when the house isn’t big enough and the weather is good. Actually the weather doesn’t really matter.

Outside anyway!!
