Great for skiing!

We’ve already been out skiing once, which is more than what I have done the last two years. And it’s a good thing I’m done with the digging for this season.

Still a muddy winter, but lots of cabbage greens and finnish turnips for the daily lunch miso soup.

There is supposed to be some ground freezing weather coming, so I can get my winter digging done.

No winter this year? The prognosis for the next 10 days says more spring weather.

The remaining cabbages are unusually green and tender. Usually they are wiped out by now by frost, cold, wind and snow.

Other vegetables too – like chard and leeks.

Good for dinner

The garlic is coming up way too early also.

Instead of skiing and building cages to protect the summer vegies from animals, I’ve been weeding…

With a weed eater and burning.

It’s never been like this in January in my nearly 50 years of gardening in Sweden. I’m inclined to believe it’s the warmest January ever.

Too cold – windy and rainy and almost freezing, so we stayed home from the market today. Working is the best way to stay warm out doors. More winterizing to do.

Tarps going up to keep things dry.

And me dry in my winter shop behind the house.

It seems like this years weather has been near perfect. I got an early start, the last frost was much earlier than usual and it’s been warm and sunny with a good amount of rain. It’s growing very well.

There are plenty of weeds too to take care of before we head north for a little vacation.

Or rather exploded. It’s been warm off and on since february, but last week was wintery – grey, cold and windy. Today it’s like a summer day, as was yesterday and probably 10 days on. And inspiring early garden activity. Like opening up the rest huts.

Planting trees and bushes like this grape plant.

And start more cabbages, lettuce and herbs.

I also tilled the crop circle where the students had spread compost, made a couple beds where I set onions, and carrots.

And set a row of Timo potatoes as the sun was getting low.

It’s quite early for here and I may have to cover for later frost, but it’s worth a try.

The cold weather makes the landscape frosty, and the ground is frozen hard making it imposible to finish the digging, but I’m almost done and have harvested almost everything. I’ll have to wait till the warmer weather returns next week.

After the early morning drizzle cleared up the day turned out great.

Good weather, good crowd and good sales.

This year I was lucky enough to get the grass cut before the dandelion invasion.

The grass was really thick and made nice easy to rake rows.

I got a good start on the mulch this year.

This is very opportune, because the weather is now very warm, windy and dry, with no rain in sight.
